We are looking for a counselor or therapist that works with kids(11yo) with ADHD and their families. We have a psychiatrist, but need someone to help my son with his behavioral issues and help my husband and me with our parenting skills. We live in Burke and have military insurance but are willing to pay out of pocket if it gives us the help we need.

Thanks for any help.

I'm not an expert by any means (have a BBA). I have witnessed the AD/HD epidemic first hand. Most of it is a farce. 99% of the kids in America diagnosed with it have not had a brain scan, which is the only way this disease can be confirmed. But your health insurance won't pay; they will pay for a shrink to give your kid a bag of pills that will make him as toxic as a car battery. In Australia, AD/HD diagnosis was up 2500% in a fifteen year period! It's a big parental cop out; don't buy into it, unless you have confirmation.

What's most interesting about this "disease" is many of the kids will sit quietly with their video games for hours, but they are Hell in the classroom. Doesn't that seem a little suspicious?

In November, we've got an appointment for my 7yo son with our clinic's specialist: Dr. Baugh of Virginia Pediatric, with offices in Herndon and Fairfax. Before we could make the appointment, we first had to fill out a very detailed questionnaire online; it's called Dr. Baugh's CHADIS Evaluation. The clinic's site is at Virginia Pediatric Group, Ltd. / Home

The problem with the questionaires is that many of the items are perfectly normal behavior; especially for boys. Playing tag, etc...Here is a ling to photos of a brain scan of a child with ADHD compared to one without.
"ADHD.org.nz - The Neurobiology of ADHD" Do a search on "the Nuerobiology of ADHD." As I stated earlier; most of the time it is a big copout. The teachers love it because the kid will sit their like a zombie. Maybe he's disruptive because he is 11 yo, and normal, while his classmates Juan and Maria can't "See Spot Run." So yes, it is something else we can blame on the illegals.

I've thought this for years. With the increase in 2 income households & both parents working overtime, etc...they do not have the time to spend with their children. Normal adolescent activity and the amount of it is just too much for an overworked tired parent, so....let's give this energy a name, diagnosis & a list of drugs to combat it.

Bottom line....make sure you have time to actually spend with your kids, or don't have them.

To be fair, yes, I'm sure some children out there have behavioral issues, but at the epidemic levels we see today? No way.

I'm sure I'll get all kinds of backlashing on this one, but so be it. Words can't hurt me...but can you say the same for the drugs you're stuffing down your childs throat?

....end rant....

Thank you GuamTubby, I will pursue that lead.

I will leave the rest of you pop psychologists to discuss the validity of the diagnosis.
