I know you're right - I guess I'm looking for an area less expensive than I'm in now. A new home here - 4 bedroom colonial would go upwards of 800K or more. Was hoping to find an area within say 1/2 hour of Falls Church that wasn't quite so expensive. I don't know anything about the area so thought I'd ask...

To be honest, there's plenty of newer homes on the market you could afford. The 30 minute commute is kind of a challenge considering the traffic sucks everywhere.

As of now, my husband is starting a job in a week in Falls Church and we live a few miles north of Annapolis, MD. I know his commute is going to be terrible but it was a job offer he couldn't refuse. Our oldest will be enterring high school next year and while he's going to give the commute a try, I'm thinking I should check out our options just in case. If he finds it unbearable, I'd like to move before next fall.
I'm starting to think though, that anywhere surrounding the Falls Church area will end up being a bad commute unless we actually lived in Falls Church - which doesn't seem like our type of place. We may be in a lose-lose situation. It's hard to look at a map and just pick random cities to check out, but that's what I've been doing.
Anyway, thank you for your candid advice. I tell ya, seems the good always comes with a bit of bad! Great new job - bad commute...lol

no offence on illegal immigrants, but that area is loaded with them. Better areas are more expensive, so yea, you can't have your cake and eat it too..
Anyways, how's the crab out there in Annapolis?

How new is new and how expensive is expensive?
Will your husband be working closer to Tysons, Merrifield, Seven Corners, or actually within town?
I would say a 30 minutes commute to Falls Church is doable from
a) Anywhere inside the beltway
b) Vienna, Annandale, North Burke
If he is working closer to Tysons, Oakton, Fairfax, and east Reston become possible.
If he is working near Merrifield/Fairview Park, Oakton, Fairfax, and more of Burke become accessible.
If he is in Seven Corners, abandon all hope.
Most of the housing in these areas is older (built before the 80s). You'll find some smaller infill developments with new housing, but it won't come cheap.
If he can get on the road by 6am, Ashburn and Gainesville (the new housing Meccas) might be doable for < 40 minutes under optimal conditions.
