Aldie Virginia
Hello all again, what of this little town called Aldie. I only ask because the elementary schools in this town grade out extremely high; top 30 in the State. The housing prices are not overwhelming me either. I will be commuting to Chantilly (intersection of 28 and 50). All comments have value so please fire away.

Aldie is a great town/area - excellent schools, really nice location if you ask me. I moved here six months ago from the more populated part of eastern loudoun and feel like it has been a breath of fresh air. I feel like we are still about 15-20 min away from most anything you would want to do, yet you still feel like you have some space, if you like trees and mountain views.
There is a small, historic town called Aldie that is surrounded by some semi-rural properties with acreage, or you can be in the outskirts of Aldie which is closer to South Riding (zip 20105) which has more planned developments an amenities. Preference is up to you as to what you prefer. They both feed into the same great school systems.

2nd that Aldie is great.
Its a bit out of the way for those doing the DC or Tysons commute and I think that has kept it somewhat semi-rual. the commute to Chantilly would not be bad at all.
Very good schools.

Aldie is far from everything, I hope you don't go out to dinner much or like to shop anywhere other than COSTCO and Target.

I disagree with that. From where we live in Aldie, we are 15 min from dining and shopping in Middleburg, 10 min from the Brambleton Town Center, 10 min from South Riding Marketplace, and 15 min from most places in Ashburn, including Wegmans. Costco and Target is also 15-20 min away in Chantilly, but that is also how long it takes to get to Dulles Town Center. It takes us pretty much exactly 25 min to get to Herndon, Reston or Fairfax, which has amost anything else we would need. I don't really consider any of that a very far drive.

We're also considering a move to Aldie, but are concerned about the flight patterns and it being so close to Dulles. Can anyone tell me how loud the planes are?

Plane noise is typical in NOVA...especially South RIding, Ashburn...I live in Ashburn and it doesn't bother me at all. I hear planes about twice a day (louder ones...one at 2pm and one at 11pm...probably international flights) but even those aren't bad.
I never get why people think it is an issue...unless you are very noise sensitive. I love being close to the airport. Nice when traveling!
Aldie is nice. Drove through it the other day. I like it b/c it is kind of rural...underdeveloped which I think we need more of. Close to South Riding, Chantilly, Brambleton (which is a part of Ashburn)
Good luck!

The plane noise is really not bad at all. I can see the planes, but it is not as loud as other parts of Chantilly. You can google an airport noise contour map, it shows you exactly where it is loudest. Come out and see what the noise is like in areas you are interested in different parts of the day.

Route 50 through Aldie and then Middleburg sucks.
66 is so much better. Probably John Marshall highway is your best bet to get to 66.

I think Aldie is a very wonderful place. We live in Springfield but often drive to Middleburg on the weekends. We LOVE the British Pantry in Aldie. If you've not been, you are missing out on a treat. My kids (who are not easily pleased) love going there for "tea."
I just think the whole area is far enough away to have that small town feeling, but close enough to everything that you don't feel disconnected. I wish that we lived out that way!
