Default Anyone Know anyGreat Online Phd Programs

All I really want to go back to school and pursue a phd. I think my best option due to my schedule is to take online classes if possible. I do however want to attend a great school.

Does anyone know a school with a great reputation that offers this option.

I am in the process of puttig my PhD application together with the Georgetown University. Unfortunatelly, it is not online but the whole program is designed for working professionals. So the classes are taught after work or on the weekends. Here is the link for the program.

liberalstudies.georgetown.edu

If you still want to do it completely online, I believe Un. of Maryland university college is offering an online PhD. ( not a great school tho)

Let me know if you pick the Georgetown, maybe we can be classmates lol

Georgetown is my number one pick. I am just nervous to commit to the classroom because of my crazy work schedule. I want something with a great reputation like Georgetown but online....I've come across Walden and Capella but I am not sure of their reputation.

When are you planning to start the Georgetown phd program? I think I am going to apply for the Fall 2009 at Georgetown. Hopefully I get accepted. I got my masters at George Washington so I think they will transfer some of the credits.

Hi there,

I am also applying for the Fall 2009. I got my masters at Boston University, also took classes at Harvard, and would like to keep the standard as high as i can..So, I decided to go with the Georgetown Un. Honestly, I would not go to Capella or Walden. They are purely distance education schools.

Here is the letter i have received from the school; Hope it helps..

Dear Prospective Student,

It is my pleasure to learn that you have expressed interest in the
Graduate Liberal Studies Degree programs at Georgetown University. You
may or perhaps have already received a packet of information soon. I
would surely welcome your visit to campus. I can sometimes schedule
appointments between 5 and 6 PM on Mondays or Tuesdays as well as
daytime appointments at the Graduate Liberal Studies office, 225
Intercultural Center. Please call and schedule a time to meet by email,
riddera@georgetown.edu or by phone, 202-687-5706.

There is any information session this evening - 6:30 PM, McShane
Auditorium in the SW Quad, parking available beneath the Quad - enter
through the Canal Road Gate. Check our website more more details on the
event and on the program itself, liberalstudies.georgetown.edu

Moving forward to seek an advanced degree is a big decision - I made
that decision for myself in the 80's. It is a balancing act! DC and the
surrounding area offer many great institutions of higher learning. We
make every effort to accommodate the needs of adult students who pursue
this degree in the evening. Whatever path or school you choose for
further education, I wish you great success. I welcome your further
inquiry about the MALS or DLS degree programs at Georgetown and also
look forward to meeting you at our Information Night tonight or whenever
you can set a time to come to the campus and discuss either of these
degrees further with me.

Best wishes,

Anne Ridder, Assistant Dean
Associate Director of Graduate Liberal Studies

Hey, maybe you should check out this discussion:

http://www.city-data.com/forum/educa...psyd-does.html

Generally speaking, my advice is NOT to get a PhD online.
1) Most of these schools are scams
2) There is no financial assistance
3) That degree will not be well-respected and you might have a major problem finding a job
4) Many people drop out (for various reasons)
5) Even if you do last until the end, you may not be able to get an internship (which you need to graduate). Internship is very very competitive.

Now this is a little different with undergrad programs, but a PhD? They have to nurture you, watch you do therapy, meet with you at least once a week, etc. It's a 50+ hour/ week commitment (more like 65-70 / week).

You would be better off either a) doing what you have to do to get into a reputable PhD or PsyD program or b) getting an MSW, in which you can do clinical work and always have work. There are pockets where you can make decent money too.
