Foods you miss from Back Home?
Over the weekend we had a party and we made some food from back home, and wondering if anyone else misses the food from back home? Back in Buffalo we always had Roast Beef and Weck (Kummelweck) at a famous bar called Anacones, and the horseradish was made in town. One of those and Beer would set you back $5-6.
What's the type of food you miss from back home? And where can you get that food in the DC metro area?

1) Real pizza. I've found some that are close, but they just can't get the dough right here, it all just tastes like Papa Johns. If the dough is close, then the sauce or cheese is off. I miss tomato pie too.
2) Soft pretzels. So far, no go around here. There was supposed to be a Soft Pretzel Factory opening in Alexandria, but I think it fell through.
3) Cheesesteaks. Philadelphia Cheesesteak Factory is actually not half bad, I was impressed. I haven't gone to the Georgetown location yet, just the one in Alexandria. And anywhere you go, no, tomato and lettuce do not go on a cheesesteak. That's a cheesesteak hoagie, and it's completely different.
4) Jewish delis. I'm open to suggestions.....
5) Ukrainain/Polish food, i.e. holubtsi, varenyky, pyrohy (pierogies). Are there any churches around here that sell pyrohy? A lot do it weekly at home, but I haven't found any here.

I haven't moved yet so i'm not sure what i'm going to miss but I was very encouraged to find a British section in my new local grocery store (including Branston pickle!)
I think one thing that I might have to ship over is squash. They were selling a bottle of ribena for $9!!

We moved here 2 years ago from the San Diego area. We really miss those "Bertos" taco shops...if you're from there you know what I'm talking about--Eribertos, Robertos, Albertos...lots of different "bertos" names, but you could just about always count on them to have great burritos or rolled tacos, and huge portions at a decent price. They didn't always look so great, but they always had those "A" signs posted by the Board of health so they must have been ok
We can't find anything like that around here, if anyone knows of one we'd love to hear of it--anything within about an hours drive, and we'd check it out for sure!

I lived in Wisconsin for awhile, and I really miss the bratwurst especially this time of year. They would simmer them in beer and onions then put them on the grill.
