I am a SAHM in Fairfax and disagree - hardly any of the Moms are SAH - the neighborhoods are like ghostowns during the day - and I am right next to Burke - there are plenty of Moms groups to join where you will meet some SAHMs but they are very clickish and standoffish - you will see!

I'd check Loudoun. I am a SAHM and the past two neighborhoods I've lived in, 50-75% of the moms stay home. There are lots of really young families in Loudoun, and lots of playgroups, moms clubs, things of that nature.

I have a friend who lives in Herndon (a few miles from Reston town center) off Kingsvale, and she is a stay at home mom along with many of her neighbors. A group of them go walking every morning. Ashburn also has a lot of stay at home moms.

Very true, claremarie. Thank you for all of the advice everyone. Burke sounds interesting with its mixed reviews and Ashburn is intriguing. Franklin Farm (in Oak Hill) is another area that we're interested in although I don't think that you could really walk home there from Crossfield Elementary. No one mentioned Chantilly, we still don't know if we should look in Chantilly or not.

South Riding (near Chantilly) is teaming with SAHM's.

I am a SAHM/Portrait Photographer who will be moving to Ashburn the first of the year, if that counts? We visited Ashburn last week and I met several SAHM's at the Little Gym and they informed me that there are 3 moms groups- 1 in the Broadlands, 1 in Brambleton and 1 in Ashburn Farm who meet several times a week. There were organized play dates, parties, social get togethers, etc. Definitely seemed like a very safe, family oriented place with many stay at home moms.

Oakton doesn't have many SAHMs because it's so damn expensive to buy a house there.

I live not too far from you, in Fairfax just on the other side of 66. I've met a couple of SAHMs in nearby Fairfax City. But the vast, vast majority of SAHMs I've met have lived in Centreville, Manassas, Burke, Haymarket and Bristow. Places like that. I think I know one in Falls Church, and she's a renter. I'm sure there are many SAHMs up between Leesburg and Reston, too, I just don't happen to know any since my apartment is kind of a hike from there.

Anyway, what the heck is my point? As a general rule, if you stay outside the Beltway and away from Metro stations, your housing prices are going to be more reasonable and you're going to meet more SAHMs. If your husband works in Reston, I think that actually puts you at a nice advantage, since you're not going to be fighting to be close to D.C.

If you're looking to meet people, I've found some fabulous, friendly, approachable SAHM groups through meetup.com.

Twinmma is right, just about every mom in Ashburn is a SAHM. Lots of stuff going on for SAHMs, something for pretty much every day of the week.
