Gainesville racism?
Hi,
My husband and I are planning to move to Gainesville in March, but I'm concerned about hate crimes if we go that far from DC. I'm white and my husband is brown. Do we have anything to fear, or is that area pretty socially liberal compared to the rest of Virginia?
Thanks,
Christa

You've got to be kidding right?? Hate crimes?? Gainesville?? Us country bumpkin folk ain't ever seen no mixed couples...
If you even remotely think that hate crimes occur in this area you obviously have not done your research before deciding to move to our extremely diverse community.

Northern Virginia is a pretty cool place and most people are very tolerant of the diversity we have in this area. Gainesville is becoming an extension of Fairfax very quickly with new homes and shopping centers and schools and I think you will find a way to feel welcome in your new community. Best of luck to you and welcome to Nova!

You are a lot more likely to be a victim of a hate crime in "Liberal" DC, than your "brown" husband is in quasi-conservative Gainesville. My parents lived there for four years and their garbage man was brown, as well as the Fedex guy, and the UPS guy. All three seemed to enjoy working in "racist" Gainesville very much.

Is this like, reverse ignorance or something? Because this post is almost hilarious.

Since I don't have any first hand experience with what the original poster might have had in regards to hate against mixed couples, I can't possibly understand what her life is like in a mixed-racial relationship. So for her to ask that question must mean that she might have had to deal with negative experiences and just wants to find a place where she can feel comfortable and safe. I personally don't think she needs to be judged for asking such a question (or anyone should be judged or mocked for asking a question). If a person doesn't have a kind, respectful answer, they should just not answer at all...the whole "if you can't say something nice..." applies here. I figure I'm in for it now, but wanted to put in my 2 cents worth (which isn't much, but still...)...

Not to worry. Gainesville is like the rest of northern Virginia - diverse, educated and progressive. I've lived in the area for 9 years and know a few mixed-race couples in my neighborhood. As far as I know, they seem to be happy and peaceful living here.
