My husbund and i are both in our mid 20's with a newborn and are looking to relocate to VA...only problem is though we are both from Queens NY I now live in NC and he's still working in NY. We're looking to start our lives together FINALLY and meet in the middle so we can remain in close prox to both "grandmas" and dont want to be in the south but cannot afford NY. Where is a good place to live in VA (pref closer North or semi mid...NOT NC ), great school districts, family atmosphere, parks/pools, great childcare, LOW CRIME and affordable apts... Any insight would be a great help because living apart isnt an options for much longer... We need our new family to be together and would like to make this informed decision before the compeletion of next summer. Thanks a BUNCH and happy holidays!!!

What are you and your husband's professions? That will affect where you might get a job, and therefore should live. Are you two looking for a government position, private industry, construction, teaching, etc?

I live in Northern Virginia, which is of course more expensive than most places in the state. If you wanted to settle here, one option would be looking for an apt in close proximity to Inova Fairfax Hospital. I assume they are always looking for nurses. Shouldn't be a problem to find one.

Virtually anywhere in Northern Virginia OUTSIDE OF THE BELTWAY is not just safe but very safe. Most places inside the beltway are relatively safe also (at one time, Fairfax County had the lowest murder rate in the country and may stll have it). Do avoid anything close to the Culmore area of Falls Church, however.

If NOVA is not your cup of tea, why not look into Lake Monticello. It's just outside of Charlottesville. Housing prices are very reasonable, the lake is supposed to be gorgeous, and I have heard it is very family friendly. And with a med school complex so close, there have to be nursing jobs available.

Hope this helps.

DCO

I think that you might want to look at some non-Wash DC Metro options. It's very expensive to live here and if your job doesn't require that you live in the area, you may want to look at somewhere in North Baltimore, Richmond, Charlottesville, etc. I guess what I'm saying is that it's great to live here, it really is, but if what you are looking for are things that are not unique to DC such as good schools, parks, nature, etc., maybe a less expensive area would be good. Richmond is 292 miles to CLT and 334 miles to NYC. There are also some low fare flights I believe to NY-JFK on JetBlue. Best of luck to you.

Yes, the cost of living is higher in NoVa, but so are the salaries, job opportunities, and amenities. It's a two-sided coin. It's meanwhile about 400 miles to Charlotte versus 225 or so to NYC, but if you don't want to be too "southern" about where you end up, the DC area is about your last stop. You could make a case for Richmond, but not such a strong one.

What is wrong with Charlotte? I have a friend that lives and there and he enjoys it. He actually left NOVA for there. If you are going to move to NOVA I would finish up the degree first. Nurses are in high demand, so you shouldn't have trouble finding a job once you get your degree. His degree as well is in demand. Good luck, and I hope you all are together soon.

You might also want to consider the suburban Baltimore area - hospital complex at Johns Hopkins is hiring nurses; Baltimore and Howard counties (outside of the city) have good public schools; it's more affordable than NoVa and it's a more northern vibe than you'll find in Virginia or points south. And they don't call Baltimore "Charm City" for nothing.

Don't want to discourage you from considering the NoVa area, but it is expensive relative to Maryland, North Carolina and the rest of Virginia.

Good luck!
