Hi all. Is it impossible for a Project Manager / Management Consultant to find a job away from the Federal gov't or a contractor? The question is slightly rhetorical, but I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with the lack of private sector opportunities. I'd like to relocate to San Jose or the west coast soon, but companies for the most part don't seem to value gov't experience. Appreciate any inputs from working professionals in the same or similar field!

just write your resume to say you're a PM, then the type of project, then mention something about being federal.
Sounds to me like you're trying to use your Govt exposure to try to get the job, but you have nothing really interesting written for your experience.

If there are West coast (product) companies that are trying to enter the Govt. Market and offer consulting/technical services locally, then your PM experiece would be valued with those companies. Other than that, you can sell your PM experience with size of project, # of people managed, certifications, any P&L responsibility you had, etc.

That's very good advice.

I saw a recent yahoo top 25 list. It had SJ as one of the top worst job markets in the Country.
