In the morning, 66 Eastbound is VERY traffic-y starting at about Exit 57 and continuing until the Beltway.

In the afternoon, 66 Westbound in bumper to bumper from the beltway out to about Exit 57. After Exit 57, it is still congested, but thins out a bit so you can probably average 45-50 mph. But, then it often goes back to being bumper-to-bumper just after Exit 52 (Centreville) and that continues till you pass the Manassas exits.

But, I agree with others. In general, anytime you don't hit traffic on 66, you should feel blessed. It is a very crowded road.

BEWARE of I-66, as I hear the traffic is truly horendous and never moves during rush hour. When researching communities to move to I asked a co-worker about Oakton/Chantilly/etc., and she warned me about the nightmare traffic.

I66 is worse heading east in the AM and heading west in the PM.

Traffic may be bad, but that's also a good sign that people are going to work and that's where the jobs are located.

Oakton's not so bad, as you can get to the Vienna Metro without using I-66 if you need to get into the city, and anything out toward Fair Lakes, Fair Oaks, Reston, Herndon, or Dulles would be against traffic...

Driving towards 495/D.C. in the morning on away from 495/D.C. in the evening is GOD AWFUL.

I only do this one maybe 2x/month but in my experience 66 is slow but not stopped at rush hour (not nearly as bad as closer in, but at 8 am still congested), 28 is quite slow. For a slightly shorter route (Gainesville to McLearen off 28) I allow an hour during rush hour, for a 10 am meeting notch it back to maybe 45.

There are also a couple "back ways" (example--Catharpin Rd or Rt 15 to 234 to Gum Springs to Braddock to Loudoun Pky or Pleasant Valley to 50 to 28) which are sometimes better, as they get you out of 66 and part of 28, but 50E can be a crawl too.

As with all of these commute questions, if you can stagger your hours a bit from the standard 9-5 you can save a lot of time.

I'll second, third, and fourth that! If there's a way to arrange your hours so you can travel off-peak, it can make a h-u-g-e difference...

I'm going to a concert tonight at Nissan that starts at 7:00. How is the HOV2 during rush hour? Does this help at all?
