I have to wonder if anything is good enough for you? Not trying to be rude: just stating facts - aren't you the person that kept saying all the houses were crapshacks? I guess you do need to stick with the country club in Haymarket (there IS one there? hmmmm)

Saganista, Thank you so much for this list. I think it will help a lot for reference. While most restaurants have non-smoking areas, they often still smell smokey throughout and we return home with everything - clothes, hair, bags, etc. - smelling strongly of smoke. Being very sensitive to and allergic to it, I thank you again for your help

It seems like it is also a great resource for inspection reports! I think it may be only restaurants that have some type of designated non-smoking area... because it lists bowling alleys, TGI Fridays, Chili's, etc. that are quite smokey... Regardless, thanks again!!

Hi Piccola,
Sorry can't give you any suggestions other than those already mentioned but just wanted to let you know you are not the only one to notice that many resturants in Fairfax County still allow smoking inside. We have recently relocated from Melbourne, Australia where there is a complete ban on smoking indoors in resturants and other establishments including pubs, bars, casino gaming rooms etc so it has been quite a shock to us to enter many resturants here with our two children and find that there is smoking indoors. I agree that even if it is only in the bar area the whole place ends up smelling like smoke if you are a non smoker.

Look, any restaurant that bans all smoking indoors is good enough for me. I don't eat much fast food because when we go out, I like to relax a little and enjoy it rather than being in a fast paced environment where it's churn and burn. It is clear that I'm not the only person here who is experiencing the smoky places so I'll leave it there.
And yes, I was ONE of the people who mentioned crapshacks. In retrospect, I think some of my reaction was to the stress of my 10th major move in 12 years so it is entirely possible that my word choices were not as judicious as they may have otherwise been. My apologies to anyone I unintentionally offended.

No problem. Since the link is sort of buried in the earlier post, here it is again. And again, the definition of non-smoking that they provide is "smoking is not permitted anywhere inside the restaurant", but the exact meaning of that may be open to some interpretation, I suppose. Could always call ahead and see what the exact policy for a particular place is...

Good news. Virginia passed a smoking ban that goes into effect on December 1, 2009.

We saw that news about the smoking ban. We were/are encouraged by it; it was a nice surprise as we didn't know it was in the works or that it could be implemented so soon.

Let's see, a list with 1700 items, and no way to search or even go to a specific letter? Only government would dare put such a user unfriendly website up. Pretty worthless.
