The Water Mine can be very crowded with poorly supervised children and young teenagers during peak hours. It's also kind of expensive.

Doesn't Fairfax County have public pools where no membership is required? I also need to find a pool for the Summer 2009 season, and I'm looking into the Springfield Swim & Tennis club (there is no waiting list) but it costs like $585 I believe! Does anyone know of a better option or whether there are public pools in that 22152 area?
Thanks.

I think that, for Springfield, this is the closest Fairfax County public rec center with an indoor pool that is open year-round, but there are others.

$585 is a bargain, especially if there are no bond payments required. You'd be hard-pressed to buy into a private swim club for less than that. I think that Springfield is a struggling pool -- there is no waiting list because the neighborhoods it serves are transitioning from middle class families with moms at home to immigrant families with working parents and no time/interest/money for the whole summer swim team thing.
For public pools, look into the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority. The Cameron Run pool in Alexandria and Upton Hill near (or in) Arlington are two outdoor public pools it operates. You can buy an annual pass or pay as you go. For nice indoor pools, the Fairfax County Rec Centers are great. The Audrey Moore (Wakefield) center is at Braddock Rd. and the Beltway.
Some area hotels offer pool memberships to local residents, but these are not always the best choice for families with young children.

Thanks for all the details, everyone, and for the info on public pools. I'm frustrated that most of these web sites for the private clubs don't show photos, but it probably doesn't matter much as it sounds like we won't be getting a membership (purchase or rental) anytime soon!
