I was looking into this same question yesterday. A good friend of my has 3 chickens and it have been a wonderful experience for their family. They are very quiet when there are no roosters . My friend lives in one of the most expensive communities in Portland Oregon. I checked into NoVa rules, and it looks like you have to have a lot over 2 acres. There is a website with chicken laws!
chickenlaws.html (http://home.centurytel.net/thecitychicken/chickenlaws.html - broken link)

BUT, I found that some are incorrect.

I am hoping for chickens somewhere in NoVa too.

I am in 22310 and we have a lot of fox. Not sure that's a great mix for people who want to keep chickens.

I'm sorry but nearly all of the coops at that website were not something I would want to look at in a neighbor's backyard. There was an article in the Post last year about crackdowns on illegal backyard chickens in Prince William and also mentioned Fairfax County. Neighbors complain about them so they must be disruptive in some ways. It said the food attracts mice, among other things.

No question about it...rodents follow their food.

Perhaps in Clifton--I know many people have horses there so I'm assuming they may allow chickens.

Hens are actually more quiet than most barking dogs. A cluck here, a cluck there and they're in bed before the sun sets. It's the perfect pet! How do you think so many families are able to keep them in secret?! Well built coops and fences will deter most wild animals. If you think there aren't wild animal's like coyote's, raccoons, and foxes already in your neighborhood you're fooling yourself!

I'm originally from Arkansas and like doing "hobby farm" stuff, and I plan to have a vegatable garden and a compost pile on what is a standard quarter-acre lot. Having a few (3-5) chickens would be wonderful for the yard and for having organic eggs for my family. Please share any information that you have, thank you!
Yeah, it kind of reminds me of a house I looked at in Maine about three years ago. It was a beautiful house that was priced right. As I walked around the house I saw that the next door neighbor was a sled dog racer and had his/her sled dogs tied outside. The Realtor swore they only barked when fed. As far as I know the house is still for sale, probably foreclosed.

That's why you can't have a chicken coop.

They have them in Oakton too. I was so surprised. Horses like ten minutes from my apartment.

My neighbor in Vienna used to have roosters. I actually liked hearing them cockadoodledoo. I think they only have an acre of land, but they may have been grandfathered in as a farm. They live in an old farmhouse.

Well it sucks that you can't have chickens in Fairfax county. I don't see anything wrong with that. Also it's better for the environment. Although we were suppose to be getting our green on?
