Default Herndon Area Info

My family and I will be moving to NOVA this summer from MD. My husband is currently commuting to the Dulles/Sterling area (hour and a half each way) and we're looking for areas hopefully within a half hour commute radius. I'm a teacher and have interviewed with Loudoun and will interview with Fairfax in Feb. We have some ideas for Loudoun if I am offered anything there, but we have lots of possibilities it seems like if I'm offered anything in Fairfax. We'd like to rent a sfh but more realistically a townhome for $2000 a month max. We have 2 little ones and potentially a dog at some point. I look at the rentals section on the homesdatabase site regularly just to get a feel for what's available but it's always hard to know about the area. If I get an offer than we'll concentrate on day visits and whatnot to the area but until then we're just narrowing things down by internet/word of mouth research.

The areas we're starting to look at are Reston Herndon, Centreville
Chantilly, Fairfax, Falls church, and Vienna. I seem to be able to find the least info on Herndon--are there any areas or schools to avoid there? Any info on any of the areas would be greatly appreciated, most notable Herndon.

Thanks!!

we've just moved to Reston. I preferred the feel of Reston to Herndon when we visited. I liked the structure of the town centre and liked all the walking trails. We got a 3 bed 2.5 bath in North point for $1550.

No pun intended, but you will have to do your homework carefully if you are considering Herndon and trying to gather information on the schools. Parts of North Herndon, which are very expensive, are included in the Langley High School pyramid, parts of North Reston are included in the Herndon High School pyramid, the Herndon schools that border Loudoun (such as McNair and Hutchison) are Title I schools with a comparatively high percentages of ESL and FRL students, and there will be a brand new elementary school (Coppermine) in the Herndon area opening in the fall of 2009, so the boundaries will change.
