Yes, but very, very few military members are VA residents, therefore they don't vote here. If you associate with them, you'll have to listen to their (usually) right wing views, but they have little effect on our local elections.

That makes a lot of sense. I should have figured that out.

I was comparing the two websites for each candidate for chairperson.
Herrity's site gives opinions on issues, but I couldn't find any specific thoughts about issues on Bulova's site.
There is a debate coming up on the 30th which will be focused only on education issues.

As chairman of the budget commitee Sharon Bulova bears a lot of responsibility for the $650 million budget shortfall (which is occurring despite the fact that our property taxes doubled over seven years). What would be amusing if it wasn't so serious is that at public forums when she is asked what she plans to do about it, she sputters that the County Executive will get to go first and she'll await his plans like some helpless damsel in distress instead of the leader that she aspires to be.

In any case, it's too late to register to vote for the special election since it's next Tuesday, Feb. 3rd.

Fairfax County in national elections has been running left of moderate, but in local races and state races it is mostly moderate. This special election is for the county board of supervisors chairman, between Sharon Bulova and Pat Herritty. I have met and talked with both, each are likeable people who care about Fairfax County. This said, the race is important since the county is in an economic crisis-which requires someone who has been through this before-that is Sharon Bulova, back in early 90's she was one of the few on a republican dominated board who despite unpopular stands like speaking out for some of the things Fairfax County has going for it-great outdoor park areas, libraries, police, fire, and schools. These along with special services toward those less fortunate were fought for by her when others accused her of being "too liberal". Sharon Bulova has not come across as some bleeding heart liberal, she, from what I have seen is a moderate. Due to her experience, she is the only one for the leadership role this time. For those who think Pat Herrity would be better, consider this, he does not have as much experience, and his ideas for the current crisis are the very type which will scare business away from an area which has always bounced back quicker than most American regions due to it's proximity to DC. I like Mr. Herritty, I am not bashing him, one day, after going through this sort of thing, he will be ready for leadership, he isn't right now. Now we need someone who can guide us through these difficult times, and it isn't like we are electing someone who is radical. Sharon Bulova has served Fairfax County for over 20 years as an elected official and has done her job well.

If you are looking for a feel of how your district or region voted, you can go to https://www.voterinfo.sbe.virginia.g...cial/1_s.shtml and check out the results for yourself.

Burke is pretty blue - the Burke Center Precinct matched the county-wide results, 60% Obama. 60% for Obama is demographically pretty solidly Democratic:

Obama's performance in Northern Virginia:

71.73% Alexandria City
71.71% Arlington County
69.55% Falls Church City
63.60% Fredericksburg City
60.11% Fairfax County
59.49% Manassas Park City
57.68% Fairfax City
57.51% Prince William County
55.16% Manassas City
53.66% Loudoun County
46.37% Stafford County
46.04% Spotsylvania County
42.71% Fauquier County

Incumbency doesn't guarantee an ability to solve a crisis, especially for someone who has been part of creating the problem and who flounders when asked for solutions.

Isn't Herrity supported by most of the local business community though? What part of his platform do you think is unfriendly to business?

(Side note: Isn't it amazing how civil a candidate discussion can be? When I saw this topic, I thought it was going to be like the flamewars of the 2008 election.)

As an educator with FCPS, I like much of what he has to say about issues on his website:
Pat Herrity for Chairman » A Focus on Teachers and Classrooms

I don't see where Bulova addresses anything about education on her site.

I now feel quite reassured! We need more moderates to keep America humming along, and I think my husband & I will feel right at home in NoVa.
