What's the housing taxes like in VA?
I was wondering what the average housing taxes per year were for Stafford County, Prince William County, Fairfax County, and Loudoun County. I live in Nassau County on Long Island and average taxes are on average $8K-12K a year for a decent home in a decent area. I'm sure Fairfax is probably the highest.

Fairfax County real estate taxes are currently 92 cents per $100 of assessed value.
So for every $100K a house is "worth" the tax is $920.00....taxes on a $500K house would be $4600 a year.
Actually, Fairfax is lower than Prince William or Loudoun....Stafford is the lowest at .84 per hundred..

I don't know the tax rate here in Prince William, but my house is valued at about $400,000 and my tax bill for 2008 was $3879.00.

Last year, PW was 78.7 cents per $100 I believe. I don't know what it is now. I'll see if I can find it.
Looks like it is .97 cents now.

Fairfax County taxes are very reasonable compared to typical places on the East Coast. For example in Maryland (Prince Georges County), you'd typically pay about $6,000/yr. taxes for an equivalent home that would have taxes of only $4,000/yr. in Fairfax. In addition, we have a "County Tax" on top of the State Tax so taxes are high in Maryland.
I believe Virginia ranks about 19 out of 50 states as far as total tax burden. Maryland is #5 or so by comparison.

There's extra pork in that tax bill too. I think I paid an extra $270 for some sort of tax fee.

I don't think I did...I've seen a few bucks for gypsy moths on there, though.
I paid it, but I never got my dang moths...

Loudoun tax rates are the worst, $1.14 per $100. On a house worth $823,000 in 2008, the tax was $9,390. While that is ridiculous, houses in Loudoun are cheaper than in Fairfax. Your money will go much farther.
Overall, people who live in Maryland pay higher taxes than in Virginia.

Wow! That's more than half the price of Long Island! I'm happy about that. That doesn't include school taxes does it? Are those high?

There's no such thing as "school taxes" (or at least not on top of the real estate tax).
