Im so glad that there is still Oatlands Plantation, Middleburg, and old Snickersville Turnpike- all looks untouched! I hope they keep it a designated historical landmark and the greedy developers will not ruin the county any more.
The coffee shop is on Main St- right in a new shopping center where the Giant is. It would be on your left hand side if you were coming in from Leesburg. Its called Market Street Coffee. They had one in Leesburg but it closed last year. They also have live music there.

Look in Ashburn, Brambleton, South Riding, Kirkpatrick Farms, Stone Ridge areas....they, for the most part, have a rural feel without being remote. The schools are AWESOME! There are lots of great shopping and amenities close by....any of these neighborhoods would be great. If you would like additional advice, let me know - I can help - I have GREAT resources!

What is the town of Leesburg like? A friend told me not to go there at night. Why? Is it bad?

We moved to Leesburg last year and I love living here. I think its a great place to raise kids. We have farms and open fields nearby, historic downtown Leesburg, also have "Ida Lee Park & Recreation Center" , which is simply awesome. When we moved in last summer, kids were playing out in the street all the time.... its all family-oriented and very safe. People drive very carefully around here too, which I, personally am very happy about .
Your friend must have warned you about the less reputable areas in the town of Leesburg, near this Walmart we have, where most lower income housing is... I've heard of some crime in that area but nothing too scary. There are some immigrants around that area, I dont know whether they're legal or illegal, but its nothing like Herndon.
I don't go out alone after dark on weekdays not cuz I'm scared, but mostly as I'm too tired after work and have a toddler to take care of , just go in my car to grocery stores or the outlet mall. But I have seen people walking around my community at night (around 10 or 11 in the night), nobody's afraid of strolling on the streets . My neighbors have mostly lived here since the community was built (in 2003) and they say the area is very safe. Although we are what you would term a cookie-cutter houses community but I love it here.

I'm also shocked why your friend would tell you this. Yes, there are a few blocks that you probably wouldn't want to wander into after dark (as I know there are in Fairfax), but, to exclude all of Leesburg for those few? Its a great town and usually very safe. Come check it out! : )

What, for saftey reasons??
seriously never had a problem with the downtown Historic area. It has a nice little movie theater, the Lightfoot resturant/hotel lots of antique shopes, a bar (balls bluff tavern) shopes etc... They have first fridays in the summer where the shopes stay open late and some live local music etc... There is also the summer concert series with live music on the couthouse lawn (very family friendly)
now, if he ment don't bother going down at night for "big" nightlife....well then yeah, it's pretty quiet, not alot happening.
The "bad" area of leesburg is south of "downtown" and it's near the walmart where the low income apts are. But even this is pretty tame, most crime here is domestic violence, some drugs, and altercations among the residents. I have driven through there many nights without ABY problems, walked through there during the day etc...(the new police/fire station is right down the road)

Just wanted to say that the Wal-Mart and somewhat "bad" section of town is east of downtown -- not south!! Sorry...had to say that since I live a couple miles south of town in a very desirable neighborhood!

I LOVE Leesburg. The downtown is over 200 years old, with some beautiful old houses, shops, and great restaurants. Going there at night is fine. I wouldn't wander into some neighborhoods away from the town, but you wouldn't anyway.

Wow, if your friend doesn't consider Leesburg safe at night I can't imagine where she *would* feel comfortable going at night. Doesn't get out much I take it?
Leesburg is about as safe as any town is going to get. Yes, there are some rougher areas over by the Walmart as other posters have mentioned, but even that isn't what I would consider BAD. Certainly downtown/historic Leesburg is a GREAT place to go at night. Lots of neat shops, restaurants, and seasonal activities.
My DH and I moved to Leesburg a couple of years ago and one of our primary concerns was safety. I'm a distance runner and usually head out to run between 3:30-4:30am--still "night" by most peoples' definition. I've never felt threatened or unsafe in any way. I'm sure you would love Leesburg.
