The safest and easiest way to buy gold is by investing in gold bonds via a stockbroker, investment advisor, or reputable online stock purchase site. But if you want to actually buy the shiny stuff that you can hold in your hands, I would recommend you contact an established rare coin dealer (not a pawn shop) about purchasing bullion coins. You can also purchase gold and platinum bullion coins from the U.S. Mint, but you should expect to pay a small premium on top of the current spot price.
