When should one spread fertilizer on the lawn (what month?) and when should the seed be spread?

What’s the best grass type that would provide the thickest concentration of grass (little to no bald spots over time)?

thoughts?

If you have crabgrass, you should put the crabgrass killer down by late Feb/early March. If you put this down, then you can't put down grass seed. You will need to wait until Fall, which is the ideal time to overseed anyway.

If you want instant results, you may want to consider sod instead of seed. Kentucky 31 provides thick but uneven grass, and is drought tolerant, but some consider it a weed. Consider a tall fescue.

Also, i just had some work done in the back yard and the contractors spread the dirt they had dub up onto my yard......(my yard is currently brown!...it used to have grass all over)
can i spread seed directly onto the earth or do i have to cover it with topsoil first? :-\

Grass seed will germinate as long as it contacts good soil. You may want to put a germination blanket or straw over the seed to prevent it from blowing away or to prevent the soil from drying out early.

Make sure the soil is wet, and has been amended not just with a chemical fertilizer, but with organic fertilizer also (ie. soil conditioner, peat moss, etc.).

I think it's actually Clay that i have in my yard....i read that grass is actually one of the few things that will grow in grass! so i will spread the grass now, and make sure that i keep it wet.

You won't be able to get the seed to germinate on clay. There are no nutrients there. Also, it's too cold outside now to put down grass seed.
