There's lots of talk about stores closing nationwide. I think NOVA has been relatively immune, but I thought it might be interesting to compare neighborhoods and see how we're actually doing.

So, how are the stores doing in your neighborhood? What's closed--and what's opened?

I'll start with Lowe's Island section of Sterling (eastern Loudoun County):

Closed: Shopping plaza lost an art framing store and a video rental store 1 year ago, and is losing an office supply store this month. A sushi restaurant is considering closing, but has not formally decided to do so yet.

Opened: Same plaza opened an italian restaurant in the former video store.

Conclusion: Not too much change here, yet. But the smaller independent businesses are in trouble.

So far most places seem to be hanging in there, it is worse in outlying areas than in the counties closer to DC.

A high end jeweler went out of business in Fair Oaks Mall - forgot the name - the one near the Caribou Coffee.
Circuit City - old one but went out of business recently.

Alberston's has just closed five stores here in Las Vegas. All were strip mall "anchors." That's a company with a long, long profitability. Had a good rep for keeping employees AND customers happy.

So, are these places closing down cause of the financial troubles, or is it because say internet replaced traditional retail shopping?

I mean, things like Netflix killed the video stores for sure.

Yesterday, The Rocky Mountain News ceased publication after 150 years! The newspapers are putting a lot of the blame on craigslist.

I was by a Blockbuster the other day, and there was one car in the parking area. They also had a sign touting "$1 Dollar Movie Rentals--Thousands of Titles." I noticed the same Dollar DVD Rental at McDonald's drive thru, and in front of Wal-Mart, too.

O'Malley's Pub in Manassas appeared to have closed down. It was a big Patriots Bar--go figure.

You'll probably find that most stores that did close down probably closed down in the Tyson's area due to high rent.

For example, Filene's Basement closed down, and Tree Top Kids (a yuppy toy store) severely chopped down the # of stores they have.

I'm surprised a store like McLean hardware can remain open. Maybe because people in McLean like paying more money for tools.

I was there today, and saw channel lock pliers for $14.99, while I bought an identical pair from Walmart for $7.99 a few weeks back.
