Fairfax Co. Looking to Cut $650 Million
Not looking good for FCPD and others.
They are looking to close Fair Oaks Police station, illuminate school officers.
Not a good decision in my opinion.

Illuminate school officers!? No, that wouldn't be good.

If they bureaucrats with the FC Government would like to look for ways to cut spending, may I suggest isle 12 of the Home Depot, where they will find the full size mirrors.

Fairfax County was betting on real estate property tax revenue and we all know what is going on with the cost of housing...

Taxes should have been capped, and there wouldn't have been an explosion in the size of the local governments during the boom years.

GOOD POINT.. That's exactly what I suspected. They should have put their excess revenue into savings to sustain future growth, not hire 4000 employees.

nwlv is correct, the problem with Fairfax County is it has way too many upper management folks in the various administrative buildings for each agency. Take the park authority for instance, most of the jobs being eliminated are in the field/parks. Most of the parks are funded already by user fees, removing the few jobs tax funded out there will only add to higher fees for county residents, if this is okay then consider this: Almost no cuts are taking place with management level positions in that agency's headquarters. Cuts need to be made is a no brainer in all areas of the county, but cutting frontline positions at police stations, libraries, schools, parks etc. and doing little or no cuts to the administrative sections is wrong toward the county residents who rely on various agencies. Having several friend's who work for Fairfax County, they are scared about losing their jobs, but at the same time wondering why several high level positions have been filled in recent months, though the county was in an economic bind. Overall, the county will survive all this, about 17 years ago similar cuts occurred. It showed then as now, a very unsound example of leadership during critical times-the last thing you do is cut services, and allowed upper highly paid management to remain-sort of like putting together a football team with coaches, maybe a quarterback, but no other players.

I am very very peeved about this news, and have been following the story closely in WP. I'm upset that they are talking of increasing classroom size, and cutting sports programs and summer schooling, and closing the libraries on Friday. I moved here for the SCHOOLS, but the County is on the verge of ruining one of the biggest assets it has, ie the great schools!
