Have read everything about suggestions for living in northern VA, but getting mixed messages. May be taking a position in Quantico. Married with 2 boys (ages 3 & 5) and would like to rent first ($2000/month). I would like a safe, family friendly area (playgrounds, etc) with sidewalks and good schools. I have lived in not-so-nice areas (gangs) and been robbed twice! I just want a nice place for us to raise our boys and get them a good education. A few suggestions would be great, not so much on actual addresses but neighborhoods would be sincerely appreciated.

You could live north of Quantico so you have a reverse commute. Montclair is a pretty nice area in PWC. There are also communities on 234 that you could look into.

I agree that Montclair would probably be a good fit for you. It is VERY pedestrian friendly, very community oriented and a large, planned neighborhood. Elementary schools within are very good, middle school is fine, and high school is on par with the others. This is one of my favorite neighborhoods. I wish I had bought there many years ago rather than where I did.

Yes, check Montclair, plus Ashland, Island Creek, Lake Terrapin.
