Kind of off-topic here, but how can you work without getting a SSN?

Your visa alone does not authorize you to work in USA.... you have to apply for SSN ASAP and meanwhile your employer gives you a job based on your documents till you get the SSN.
In USA, if you get work authorization, you are entitled to get SSN.... H1, L1, whatever the visa is.... since you do have to pay taxes.
