Husband and I are newbies to NoVA and maybe purchasing in Gainesville area where are children would go to Glenkirk Elementary. Can anyone tell me pros/cons of school? Also Gainesville middle school and Battlefield hs? I have hear that Fairfax County has very highly rated schools. How would the above schools compare? Not being from the area - would love to get locals opinions. Thanks!

We live in Gainesville and I have one child at Glenkirk Elementary and one at Gainesville Middle School. I've been very, very happy with both! The schools on the west side of Prince William County are exceptional, and I would say they're on a par with the Fairfax County Schools. My boys have both had great teachers, and I love the fact that parents are so involved in the schools. Glenkirk and Gainesville both have a very active PTO, as well as several extra curricular options.

The folks I know with older kids at Battlefield have been very happy with that as well, but my guess is that neither of my boys will go there. There is a new high school being built (it was just approved, and I believe construction is due to begin in the next year or so) near Vint Hill Road and Sudley Manor Drive. It will be much closer for our kids, so I'd be very surprised if they continue to feed into Battlefield.

We LOVE the Gainesville area. We've been here about six years now. Folks are very friendly, and it's easy to make friends -- for parents and kids! The new stores, etc., being built up at Virginia Gateway have been a very nice addition to the area, and I LOVE that Wegman's is just a five minute drive from here.

Let me know if you have any more specific questions!
