I hate having religion pushed on me...and have on many occasions. It is such a turn off. But the church in schools thing happens all over the country and in the most non-religious states. They do pay a fee to use the schools. Think of it as a good thing...the congregation can't afford to build their own mega-church monstrosity.

And some congregations choose to spend their money on charities instead of buildings.

The last vestige of religion in the local schools were the baccalaureate services, held at local places of worship. These were phased out in the mid-90s I believe. Also, the commencement invocations/benedictions common at local public schools were ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 1992.
