Any info on 20171 - Oak Hill Area appreciated
We're considering this area (crossfield, carson, oakton pyramid) - Is this a nice, safe area for kids? Are there things for kids to do around this area?

It's a great area, lots of nice homes, and that's one of the best school pyramids. Yes, it is very safe.
There's not much for kids to do, that doesn't require car transportation. There are many sports activities available. Just about anything for kids is available with fairly short car ride. Is there a particular neighborhood that you are looking at in Oak Hill/Herndon?

Have you looked in Vienna? There are lots of SAHMs, good schools, lots of playgrounds and sports.

Chantilly Highlands
I'm military and have lived in 7 states over the past 15 years and the Oak Hill neighborhood is the BEST we've ever experienced...lots of reasons why...but if i had to name the top five; schools, everything is close-by (stores, shopping...things to do), activities for kids, nice neighbors, and the "I can see myself living here for a long time" factor! Good luck.

It's a nice area and there is a lot to do although you would need to drive to most places. We were considering that area and the only reason we didn't buy there was because the commute to DC for my husband would have been too long.

I get around the commute issue by owning a hybrid...cheap gas and able to drive inside the beltway...otherwise, yes, daily commute to the Pentagon wouldn't be a desirable feature of living here.

I grew up in this area during my middle school and high school years (mid to late-90's, went to Oakton High and Franklin Middle) in a development off of Ashburton Ave, bordering Franklin Farm. All-in-all, a very nice area to live.
Echoing what others have said, yes, it's very safe. The biggest "crime" incidents we ever had were always very very minor things. No violent crime I can ever remember. Most of the people who live in this area are white-collar professionals. I'm not sure if it's changed much over the past ten years or so, but there were always lots of kids in the area spanning a wide spectrum of ages. If you have children, chances are you'll have plenty of other kids within a year or so of their age range in the area.
It's quiet unless you live right off of Fairfax County Parkway. You're also 10-20 min. away from tons of shopping, movies, restaurants (Reston Town Center, Fair Oaks Mall, Fairlakes, etc.).
