My family and I may be moving to NOVA and are looking to rent a single-family house (or trade, but that's another story) in a SAFE area. Walkable would be great, but what we really need are places with lots of young kids (friends for mine) and good schools.

Northern Virginia is safe. There might be that one wacko doing something stupid occasionally. The only bad parts in my personal opinion are the RT-1 area in Alexandria (wyth street, north alfred street in and around there, but it's not even that bad), Arlandria part of Alexandria, and some area's around Landmark. Culmore in Seven Corners in prob. the worst neighborhood in Nova besides Georgetown South in Mannassas. Have no worries of consistand murders and rampat crime, Nova is no where in the D.C. range, or PG county Maryland area for that matter.

Arlington has plenty of safe area's to check out, as is the majority of Alexandria. Falls Church City is also a safe area, then you also have the rest of Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William County.

Check out Kings Park West in Fairfax County it is not walkable to the Pentagon but the Metro Bus runs every day to the Pentagon. Lots of military and ex-military families live there. Growing up in that neighborhood all your friends were military brats. Robinson Secondary and Laurel Ridge are good schools as well. I went to both.
