I chopped down a tree while armed this past weekend. Later that night I went to dinner with some friends and open carried my pistol (per Virginia law, I cannot conceal carry in a restaurant that serves alcohol). No one said anything about my pistol...
In Virginia, there are about 160k conceal handgun permit holders. You'd be suprised how many of those folks you pass by without even knowing it. Guns have been part of the US culture for years. This is not a new phenomenon.

I'm no cop, but...severe blunt force trauma tells me that the murder was not planned in advance -- perhaps some crack addicts looking for money to get their next fix? I don't buy the CIA conspiracy theory -- I would think an assassin would use a gun and get rid of the bodies and make sure both did not survive, but this speaks of someone who was quite sloppy and clumsy -- perhaps b/c they were high on drugs? I just think of the stranger on stranger murders/muggings in DC and often, blunt force trauma is used. It sounds like it happened at their home and the burglars were caught by surprise? The victims lived three right turns off of Rt. 7 in a fancy neighborhood, so the robbers picked something close to the main road (again, showing a lack of planning). Just my thoughts.

The whole report sounded like a gang initiation to me. What gets me is if it is a gang initiation, why attack the elderly? Does that make you a tuff gang banger when you beat elderly people to death or rape them?
WTF…
Bunch of sicko’s….
I hope they get locked up, have a broom shoved up they're ***, and die of rectal hemorrhaging.

It's just horrible how these people died. I can only imagine their terror and pain as they were beaten with a ball bat or whatever it was. It must be so painful for their children to think of their parents dying that way.
If they were beaten at home, why weren't they left there? If they'd been left in their home it would have been many hours before they were found. I think it happened outside, when the witness heard the screaming and saw the van with the 3 people in it. I bet it was a mugging, for money, and it didn't occurr to the dopes that joggers/walkers at 5:30 AM don't carry money. duh. Perhaps they were drugged out, or desperately needing a fix, and were furious when they found that the Bennetts had no money on them, so they beat them to death. There's no way that 3 people will get away with this, one of them will blab. The police need to raise the amount of reward money, then one of them will tell, or a relative or friend will turn them in. They're such lowlifes, they're probably waiting for the amount of reward money to increase before they turn in their buddies. I hope they all hang, slowly.

I agree with you. It sounds like a likely scenerio, their family must be in so much pain. I hope it has the same ending as you.. a slow and painful end to their lives..

The incident does not appear gang related, but it cannot be ruled out.
Every tip and e-mail is being researched by investigators in the Sheriff’s Office in coordination with other agencies
Rumors of a drug arrest in recent weeks at a site close to the bridge at Goose Creek are false. There was an arrest made for Drunk in Public, but it is not believed to be connected with the attack on the Bennetts.
While the Sheriff’s Office is pursuing the white work van, there is no information available at the license plate information. There was no ladder on the van and there was no writing on the van.
Because of witness statements, the Sheriff’s Office believes that there were “three, probably four” assailants.

My point is - where is this country heading?
Do people stop and think about that?
Cause I do
If I have to carry a gun while walking in the area with my kids - this whole scenario is F'ed up.
Are we heading into a 3rd world country scenario here?
Cause next step from buying a gun, is building a 10 ft fence around your house. Then come bars on windows and double doors.
I know that america has this whole gun culture and all, and thats fine.
Buy a gun, keep it in your house, open carry, conceal carry, etc.
People dont realize the big picture. And the big picture, as it appears to me, is our thought to be safe communities are no longer safe.
And we all know the reasons, we just dont talk about them, to keep it on the POLITICALLY CORRECT side of things.
That was my point.
End of rant

Get real, who would think to carry a weapon while on a leisurely early morning stroll with a family member through a quiet safe neighborhood! This is exactly why laws that allow concealed weapans don't work, the criminals strike when you least expect it.
Anyway, this article, while heartbreaking, just goes to show that NOVA isn't all that safe like it's cracked up to be. Loudon/Fairfax County has lots of crime, just like D.C. and Prince Georges County in MD, so people need to get off their high horse because it can happen to anybody.

Oh please, the crime in DC and MD especially PG County is much higher than Virginia. Every time I watch the local news it's some story about a killing in MD or a mugging in DC. You couldn't pay me enough to live or work in DC/MD. When I was job hunting, I specifically didn't look in DC/MD.
I carry my firearm when I walk my dog. It's not something special I do just for walking my dog, I always carry when it's legal to do so. My safety is my responsibility, I understand the police cannot guarantee my safety 24/7.
