I carry my firearm when I walk my dog.
Well if you're in oh-so-safe Virginia then why do you feel a need to carry a gun while walking your dog? While living in Prince Georges I never felt a need to carry a gun, and my hubby used to even go running in the mornings on trails all by himself but he never had any issues.

Now look at what happened to Chandra Levy in "safe" NW DC, and look at what happened to this couple in "safe" Loudon County! We now live in Burke and reality is, we're probably just as likely to be murdered in BURKE as we were in PG County! Already, a garden shovel we had just purchased and had placed in our (unlocked) shed got stolen. We didn't report it as it only cost $8 and didn't want to drive up the crime statistics in our new community, but A THEFT OCCURED IN BURKE which was supposedly a "safe" community.

Virginians are just better at covering up all the crimes that happen and blaming it on other people (ie. illegals from gangs outside the community), that's all.

Agreed with Skapov.
Crime is on the rise in this area, but its bad for "publicity".

Turn on your police scanner, you will hear stuff that never makes it on 6 oclock news.

I do notice that I hear about crimes later on from people -and that nothing was reported on the news or in the local papers? Why is that?

I need a scanner.

If the economy gets much worse I suggest everyone step up security - you might end up putting a barbed wire fence around your home - in many countries that is the way you live. A girl I grew up with came from an upper class Philiphino (spelling?)family and they had to live behind high walls and had guard dogs partroling the premises - and this was very common there.

Like I've said in this thread already, crime can happen anywhere so I choose to protect myself everywhere. If you want to stick your head in the sand and believe that the world around you is completely safe, then more power to you. Ignorance is bliss I guess. It's the same reason I have a fire extinguisher in the house and the truck. I don't think they'll be a fire, but I'm prepared if the situation arises.

And your comment about Virginians covering up stuff is just idiotic. It's better to be though of as a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt...

With the way the economy is, crime is on the rise everywhere, this area is not immune to that. People are getting desperate and choose to do stupid things, which is more reason to be aware of your surroundings and able to protect yourself. I'm sure there are realtors on here who carry when going on showings, do you think they are paranoid too? Do you think they only carry if they are showing in a bad neighborhood or never carry when showing in million dollar sub-divisions?

It's actually Filipino when speaking of the people. I'm from the Philippines and that is the norm if you're well off. My cousins live in a subdivision that has armed guards at the entries. My Mom and Dad put a concrete wall around their property. On top of the concrete wall, there is broken glass sprinkled into the councrete. They do have dogs, but they're harmless. They do have geese in the property because geese are great at alerting on intruders since they have great hearing and make a racket. They only live a few blocks from the police station, but you better believe my parents has the means to protect themselves.

It's a safety issue because they don't want to be kidnapped for ransom. I believe there was a missionary couple that got kidnapped a few months before 9-11. They were held for months and the husband was killed during the rescue mission.

So maybe my upbringing has taught me to be cautious, versus relying on anyone else to protect me. If I'm looked down because I choose to protect myself, then so be it. I won't loose any sleep over it.

If this country keeps going the way it is, we might just end up like that.
Time will tell.

Right now, we are getting a pretty good preview of whats to come.

And it didnt start this week, or this year.

Aren't we there already? Look at those Hollywood homes with the huge walls and in gated communities. Keeps the rich in and the poor out. It's just different economic scales.

You may think you're middle class, but you're just poor to a rich person - lol

I have lived in a country where high gates and large dogs was a normal occurrence.
I do not live there anymore.

And I hate to see this country go the down the same route.
It happens very quickly.
