I do because it seems like something the transients would say. I just irks me. NOVA is a college!

I am a native of the area, and to me it was simply Virginia, or "Northern Virginia", some times. But moreover, Loudoun, Prince William or Fairfax Counties is where you would say you were from . Not "NOVA".

When speaking I usually say Northern Virginia. But when writing, I love using NOVA.

I spend a lot of time talking to people from other states, so saying I'm from Loudoun wouldn't mean much to them.

My pet peeve is people saying we're in DC. I'm always quick to say NOVA is not DC. I get annoyed when people act like NOVA is merely a suburb of DC, as if we had no industries, corporations, or personality of our own.

I travel to DC every once in awhile, but I certainly don't feel that's where I live.

I'm a soon-to-be Yankee transplant from the thriving city of Scranhattan, and I'll be telling people I'm from NOVA! NOVA, NOVA, NOVA, NOVA, NOVA, NOVA, NOVA!!! There!

As normie said--I never "say" NOVA, I say Northern Virginia. When I'm posting on the internet, I always use NOVA for shorthand.

In fact, I don't think I've ever heard anyone say they lived in NOVA, they always say Northern VA. But, plenty of people do go to NOVA college!! One of my friends calls it NOVA CO-CO for NVCC. Apparently that's a nickname for the school.

I very rarely say NoVA, unless I'm talking about the college. It's just an abbreviation to use online.

When I worked in Burke, people used NOVA to refer to the college, not to refer to Northern Virginia.

I'm a lifelong Northern VA resident and I always say I grew up in Fairfax and live in Arlington. When I travel, I say I live in Virginia, am going home to Virginia, etc. NOVA is the community college in my vocabulary.

Despite being a fan of the actor/governor/president, I always say National Airport. I never use the term Inova and instead call it Fairfax Hospital. Arlington Hospital is always going to be Arlington Hospital, not this VA Hospital Center business, etc.

So yeah....I'm with the original poster in saying we live in Northern Virginia, not NOVA!

I go to the college known as NOVA and i usually say i live near DC or possibly Northern Virginia when talking to out-of-towners. Referring to where i'm from i tell people simply Hampton or Tidewater.
