TEACHERS...what time of the year did you get hired?
I'm from out-of-state and trying to determine how much longer I should lease my apartment. I did the job fair in Fairfax County and was told as early as April to as late as July 1st for job vacancies to be posted. Teachers around where I live usually get hired by early June, not including those last minute jobs, so this is stressing me out. I also need to tell my principal within the next 2 months whether or not I'll be returning next year. I really want to move, but I don't want to make a promise to my principal that I won't be able to keep.

I'm also interested in any responses you get. I'm in WA state and my husband is being relocated (in May) to DC for work. We are looking at Burke, VA and I'm just starting my application for Fairfax County.
Good luck to you Figaro! I haven't applied for a job in 10 years.

Teaching in Fairfax
From what I understand, it might be difficult to get a job in Fairfax County because of budget cuts within the Fairfax county school system. What did they say at the job fair?
I am trying to switch from a private school to Fairfax county schools this summer. Hopefully it will be easier to find a job since I work in special education.

I got hired by Prince William County in October. I didn't know that we were moving though and didn't apply until August.
I would say with the budget cuts and redistribution of current staff, that they may not start hiring a lot of people until July.

I was told at the job fair that it is "anticipated" that the whole county was still going to hire several hundred teachers for all grade levels. Special education is listed as a critical field on their website, so you should be fine. I was also told that experience gives you a "one-up," and I have only 2 years in elementary, but that's 2 years more than all the people who's straight out of college have. What stinks most for me is that I'd have to take the VA teacher exams since I am one year shy of the exemption criteria. I would definitely prefer to stay in my school one more year to avoid the tests and feel more confident of getting a job, as hopefully things will get better in the economy by next year.

What is this about? Doesn't VA have reciprocity with other states? I assumed if have teacher certification in another state it would pretty much transfer over?

Jobs in Fairfax County are going to be very tight this year. Vacancies will be posted on July 1st.
Did you get an early contract? If so, then you will definitely get a job but you will still have to interview with principals to get hired at a specific school. But, you'd be able to quit your current job with no worries. When I started, I got my early contract in early May and was hired by a school at the end of May.
I have known many people who have gotten hired in August, however. It can be very frustrating to wait, but often it is the way it works...

I got hired in May the year I started in my current county. I know that jobs in PWC are already posted and principals are interviewing. I know someone that interviewed in Loudoun last week as well (and got hired), so there ARE vacancies, and they're not all in SPED. The jobs are out there, just not as many as usual.

how come your teaching career brings you to the area? Does the pay matches up with the cost of living?
