I left NOVA for all the reasons "y'awll" have said ;-) Thing is I moved to Fredericksburg city, within walking distance to the VRE which I take to work. I read my books one hour each way, have read more than I ever did in college.
Some bad news: wikipedia seems to think that Fredericksburg is the northernmost part of the evil that is Northern Virginia. NOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooo.....!!!!!!!!!

Thank you It always seems that everyone always complains about some of the most insignificant things. If you really want to go to a place in the DC area that has plenty of things to complain about, go to suburban Maryland. Along with all of the things all of you complain about NoVA, MD also has high crime rates, half-ass mass transit service, a apathetic state government, and rude, low-mannered, shallow, ghetto, materialistic and bigoted people. You spend a day in this place and you will gain a damn good new appreciation about living in NoVA. And if any one of you are that adamant on moving out, how about I switch places with one of you. Seeing how some of you rave about the "old Northern Virginia," maybe you'll like MD a lot better.

Its because the yankees have taken over Northern Virginia. I grew up there and I was treated like a stupid hick because I didn't talk like some New Jersey person.
Then they claim to be "liberal" and "open minded". Some of them are the most narrow minded provincial people I know !!!
Now I live in Richmond.
Thank the Good Lord for good 'ol Richmond, Virginia. A place where the southern way of life still pervails.

So for someone like myself (a native of CA San Francisco Bay Area - so I'm used to the traffic) who is actually considering moving TO NoVa - where should I be looking to get something (either to rent or own) that is high quality, safe, and has some green space around it? I will be commuting into downtown D.C. for work (but of course am willing to take public transportation part of the way), so whatever areas you advise, please list the approximate commute time each way. Also, cost is not too much of a factor, since I'll be on a "major law firm attorney salary." Also, I'm not as familiar with MD, so if places like Annapolis or the like would be better, please let me know as well. Thanks!

on the DC Metro area commuting mess: yes, it is...why do people go there? Money and jobs---govt jobs and contractor jobs. Also, it used to be more manageable. There is a lot to see and do but now there are so many people and cars-maybe it will blow up-most people communte a long way so they don't have that mess on the weekend, too. But there are actually people who line up on route 50 for half of their weekend to go to the beaches in Delaware and Ocean City, Md. It is best to take the Metro when you can and also to car pool...that way you learn alternative ways to get to your destination.

Not sure about Springfield: but; if memory holds me correctly; there was a Hotshoppes in the Rosslyn section of Arlington near Key Bridge.
Again: my personal knowledge is over 29 years old.
Hell; I use to 'hang out' @ Springfield Mall in the mid 1970's
