With that being said I want some honest opinions here into what you, Northern Virginians, ex-Northern Virginians, or prospective Northern Virginians-to-be would like to see photographed. I've posted thousands upon thousands of images of dozens of NEPA and North Central PA neighborhoods on this forum since I joined in mid-2006, some of which prompted relocation interest, and I hope to do the same during my weekends in NoVA.
I tend to enjoy urban photography more so than nature photography, but some images I've snapped of the Fall foliage up here has garnered me more praise than that of a busy urban street scape. I already have some ideas in mind of where I'd like to head to do some photo tours, but more suggestions are always very much welcome. I'm going to gauge interest in this poll as a barometer of where I should head, using the top-voted option as my first tour, and going on progressively from there.
This is a multiple-choice poll. Feel free to vote for as many options as you'd like, and please be specific (i.e. if you select "Reston" but really want to see the Reston Town Center more than anything else, please mention it).
Thanks, and I look forward to becoming a productive member of your community despite the feathers I've ruffled with my political musings.

One thing you might like to do is take a boat trip out of Alexandria either up the Potomac to DC or Georgetown or down the Potomac to Mount Vernon and the George Washington Estate. Other areas if you like water falls is to take the C&O Canal up the Great Falls of the Potamac.

Historic London Town
Historic London Town and Gardens is a twenty-three acre park located on the South River in Edgewater, Maryland. The park is owned by Anne Arundel County and managed by the London Town Foundation, a non-profit foundation. London Town has within its boundaries part of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century town of London, which is currently being excavated by archaeologists from the Lost Towns Project.

I used to live in Arlington, and now live in Silver Spring. Here are some places in the area that I think would make great photo tours (and that you would enjoy too!):
Maryland:
1) Silver Spring (just won smart growth award [Arlington was first recipient])
2) Bethesda
3) Annapolis
4) Frederick
5) Ellicott City
6) Columbia (can compare with Reston, both planned communities)
West Virginia:
1) Harper's Ferry
DC:
1) Georgetown (interesting to compare/contrast with Alexandria)
2) H St. NE (has been undergoing major revival lately)
3) Anacostia (see blog Anacostia Now! for good POC)
Virginia:
1) Arlington (Orange Line Villages, Crystal City, Westover(!), Fairlington, Shirlington, Columbia Pike)
2) Occoquan
3) Vienna (Church Street is particularly nice)
4) Middleburg/Upperville
5) Charlottesville
6) Flint Hill (my pick for hidden gem)

I would also recommend several day trips out of the area. The first is Luray Caverns in Luray Va which is near the Blue Ridge. Luray Caverns is about 1 mile long and one of the best caves in the USA. I would rate it up with Carlsbad Caverns (NM) and Merrimac Caverns in Mo. The Blue Ridge is most spectacular in the Autumn when the leaves turn. It will remind you of some of the best of Central and NE Pa. Another place kind of frozen in time is Harper's Ferry WVa. There is lot that was preserved form the Civil War era. If you get lucky or pay attention to the calender you will have a lot of Civil War re-enacters doing their version of the areas military history. When I was there, members of Stonewall's Brigade were occupying the town which Jackson actually did as part of Lee's advance in to Maryland on the run up to Antietum.

Beautiful photos, ScranBarre!
Thank you so much for sharing your stunning pictures of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, ScranBarre! It was a pleasure to look through them. What a beautiful area!
We may have to drive out there before we move. Do they have a great ice cream/milkshake place?!

Thanks for sharing the pictures I cannot wait to be in that corner of the world. I am missing green grass and water pretty bad right now. I will even take the humidity, mosquitos and gnats along with that.

Nice photos, well done. If you enjoyed Harpers Ferry, you might also like Occoquan. It's a similar town from the same era. If you go to Occoquan be sure to visit the park across the river to see the ruins of an old prison. It has quite a story (a chapter in the suffragette movement that was gruesome that the prison was torn down and the land turned into a park).
