Default Tips on Commuting from Fairfax (22030) to U Street/Shaw Metro Exit

Hi!

I'm looking for tips and best practices for a daily commute to the U St/Shaw (Metro) areas from Fairfax VA. For safety, price & apartment amenities, Fairfax seems to be the best option, despite the commute.

So, I'm planning on bussing from Blueberry Landing to the Vienna metro, then transferring to the green line and walking/bussing the rest of the way.

If I start my commute at 6 am, when can I expect to get to my destination (light bussing sandwiching a Metro trip from Vienna to U St)? If I begin a commute back at 5 p.m., what time will I get home? What about a trip home at noon instead?

I would prefer to drive, but is there a way to get from A to B while missing the carpool restrictions on 66 and still having a reasonably reliable (time-wise) commute?

Thanks
RJ

I can't help you with the drive, but plug the start and finish addresses into Metro's trip planner to see how long it will take by public transportation:

There may be an argument for driving to and from the metro rather than bussing (compare bus fares to metro parking, ride times) but all the way into DC (and especially out at 5 pm) will be brutal, especially without 66.

When I go from 22030 to DC (drive to metro, orange line to L'Enfant Plaza) it takes an hour or 1:15. Would add 10-15 for your metro transfer, not sure what the bus would add.

Ugh. Such an expensive and long commute. So discouraging.
