Default Major construction starts in Tysons on Monday

FAIRFAX - The Virginia Department of Transportation, as part of the I-495 High Occupancy Toll (HOT) Lanes Project, is replacing the I-495 Capital Beltway outer loop south bridge piers at the Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) interchange. In order to safely construct the bridge piers, the left lane in each direction on Route 123 will be closed from the week of April 20 through November 2009, weather permitting.

The left lane closures will be set up approximately 500 feet in each direction from the Beltway Overpass. When traveling though the work zone, motorists should expect delays during morning and evening rush hours. Route 123 will have two through traffic lanes and one merge lane in each direction.

The Phase 1 left lane closures will remain in effect until November 2009, weather permitting. The left lanes will reopen to motorists for the 2009 holiday shopping season and then close again for Phase 2 in early 2010 for 18 to 24 months. During the Phase 2 left lane closure period, construction activities will include completing the I-495 south bridge construction and building the I-495 Capital Beltway inner loop north bridge piers. The Lexus Lanes construction has really screwed up the Braddock Road interchange...I can only imagine the mess Tyson's is going to be.

Another good reason to stay the heck away from there!

Now someone please tell me that I misread and I'm wrong as can be. I read that they'll turn four of the inner lanes into HOT lanes and just two lanes for regular traffic. That's terrible that's going to make traffic so much worse. Are they really going to just have only two lanes? Even though this is a few years from now I might still be living in Oakton or using the beltway for whatever reason. Actually I love using the beltway because I'm going against traffic away from Tysons so I can only imagine what traffic will be like going to Tysons.

Also is it me or is Tysons too spread out and decentralized for the metro to make public transportation attractive? At the end of the day a metro should've been built decades ago. It may be too little too late.

No. 4 HOT lanes (2 in each direction) and 8 regular lanes (same as now).

Tyson's is poorly planned, but it will change when the metro is built.

Do you all envision Tyson's Corner becoming denser and more well-defined with more in-fill development once the new Metro line is completed? I was encouraged to see the density at the Reston Town Center, which was becoming more or less a "regional downtown" of sorts, and I hope that particular area continues to grow UPWARDS instead of sprawling itself out. I've already befriended a couple who has just moved to a condo in the RTC, and I hope to be invited to their upper-floor unit so I can see what the view must be like!

Tyson's is going to be a mess with the Metro construction the next few years. I'm just glad I don't have to go anywhere near there. I could care less about going to either of the malls there - I've been to them dozens of times over the years but really have no need to go there while the construction takes place. Traffic was enough of a mess there before the construction.
