Let me also say that while housing prices have come down dramatically w/ the economy in the state it is.....several years ago house prices were still rather high.

Since there are no 'real' distinguished ghetto's in Winchester like other major cities, the 'affordable' apartment complexes and some of the townhouse areas attract a VERY diverse group of individuals. I also know a couple that lived at Peppertree for a year, 2 years ago and would strongly advise looking somewhere else. While it is probably one of the better choices, I would strongly suggest looking @ the townhomes I suggested....depending on the price you are looking @, I could recommend a few others in Stephens City as well I like the one I suggested the best by far. Again, it is less than a minute from 81 and then a few literal minutes to the hospital......loved that place Best of luck....where are you from by the way?

Lived in Winchester for 2 years. We lived in Windstowne townhomes, and it was very peaceful. I think there are a few townhomes for rent.

I am buying a house in downtown Winchester. There are some streets/ neighborhoods that are really nice and, like most cities, can have some shady folks living nearby a block away. Just depends on what street you're on. I am not so familiar with the apartments and townshouses but hopefully the University's Housing Services can provide some insight.

Winchester is going through a transformation right now--a type of "Renaissance" of the historic downtown. The shady parts downtown once labeled the place as a "recovery town". But it's changing and changing fast. There are several govt agencies which have moved there recently which has helped the economy.

There are plenty of restaurants, shops, pubs, and walkable areas. It is a fantastic historic town. I'm sure your son will enjoy his time there. Best of luck on your housing search!

Wondering what some good districts are for a family who has kids from preschool to senior high age? Also what government agencies have moved into the Winchester area as someone stated above?
