Default where to live, hubby's work in Dahlgren, Va.

My husband will be stationed in Dahlgren, Va. Can you tell me more about the area? From what I read, there is nothing in there. Where is the best place for us to live? It is just the two of us for now, no baby yet but got furry dogs. We are willing to spend at most $1,500 for an apartment/condo/house for rent. My husband is willing to travel 45 mins. We want a nice neighborhood, not too rural, preferably close to shops, restaurants, stores and places where there are activities to do.

My husband works in dahlgren and we chose fredericksburg. I got alot of backtalk about not moving there for various reasons but I have to say I do enjoy it so far (its been a whole month ). We came from san diego area so things ARE different here but in a nice way mostly. Dahlgren proper is pretty rural though, there are some small strips malls (mainly with a subway, giant food store, mcdonalds etc) and then there is the military base and a realtor, bank but not much else. It IS beautiful though. I know a few people who do get enormous homes in king george/colonial beach but for a couple w/o kiddos, I'd say you probably would like fredericksburg area much better. There is a mecca of shopping in fburg, everything is right here. You can easily find a place for 1500, in fact you probably could find a single family home with large yard for about $1700. There won't be too much "nightlife" here from what I can tell, but the downtown area is cute and most of the areas (with a few rougher areas) are safe. It takes about 30-40 min to commute and the drive is simple, its mainly a 2 lane highway getting out to dahlgren and it is pretty dead so its enjoyable rather than sitting on the 95 to go north to DC or something. I haven't experienced much traffic here at all but this is coming from southern cali standards. I know people ***** about the traffic here and I wonder why but Im sure they knew it before fburg got more built up with shopping so its all relative.
Good luck!
