I just recently was offered a position at a hospital in Takoma Park, MD. I would be moving from Florida and not too familiar with the area and traffic. I have several friends who live in Arlington and would love to live in that area as well. I know the metro can get me from arlington to Takoma park, but I was wondering what the commute time would be if I drove?

I would be doing a 7am-7pm shift, which in reality means I would need to get to the hospital by 6:30am and probably wouldn't be leaving until 7:30pm. According to the hosptail website the directions given are as follows..
Take I-495 N/Capital Beltway toward Baltimore. Merge onto MD-193 E via Exit 29B toward Langley Park. Turn slight right onto Carroll AVE/MD-195. Proceed to 7600 Carroll Ave.

When I mapquest it, it has me taking 29th, 22nd, 16th, 19th st, etc and claims it is only 10 miles distance.

Would I be crazy to make that drive or would my hours miss rush hour? I did hear that there could be stoplights at every block which would increase the travel time..

Take the beltway. At the hours you'll be traveling, it shouldn't be bad at all, especially in the mornings.

I suggest 3 of the best ways you can get there.
1. Take GW -> I-495 -> 193 (University Blvd)
2. Take I-395 North -> SW Freeway -> Pennsylvania Ave -> BW Parkway -> I-495 -> 193
3. Thru DC

I would probably rank these in this order. The troubling thing is that choice #3 although the shortest, is 99% of the time going to be the longest, because well, its DC.
Choice #2 would be so much faster if only they finished the SouthWest Freeway!
Choice #1 is probably the best route but sometimes its backed up and you may need to take one of the other routes. If you are travelling around 7am you should be ok, but 7pm at nights can be tough coming back, even for that late in the day.
