Annandale has a higher concentration of Asians than many other parts of Fairfax County. Although sex offenders come in all races, I believe Asians are less likely to commit these type of offenses. This may have something to do with the disparity in the data.

If I were you I would look at this on a neighborhood by neighborhood basis. You could have one neighborhood in Fairfax with no sex offenders and another with a half dozen. So looking at the numbers by zip code could give you the wrong idea about particular neighborhoods.

Most Annandale neighborhoods located outside the beltway are really nice and probably will have few sex offenders. I don't care for the inside the beltway neighborhoods, although some of the posters take exception to my point of view.

Is Fairfax a safe place to live? It sure is. In fact compared to the rest of the country, you cant get much safer. There are a few areas to avoid, that's all.

Those of us who live in Fairfax just carry a big stick every time we go outside, to keep away the hordes of pervs. Seems to work okay.

I don't blame people for checking the registry, and if you're about to buy a house next to the editor-in-chief of Kiddie Porn Monthly, that's a good thing to know. But statistically, your child is MUCH MUCH more likely to run into trouble from a family member or someone else the child already knows, rather than just some random guy down the block. Don't let the registry stress you out too much.

There could also be variations in reporting crimes that are related to cultural differences. Who knows, but like you said, Fairfax is safe.

Well, thanks guys. When I checked the database, it was not for all of Fairfax county, but the city of Fairfax, specifically. However, when I looked back on it again, and really looked at the work vs. home I found that 29 work in the city of Fairfax, but don't necessarily live there, which would bring the numbers down to 36 for the actual count. I do feel a lot better, so thank you for all the input. I was very interested in a house in Annandale, and coincidentally, guess who lived right next door? You got it, a man convicted of child porn, so needless to say, it looks like this could happen anywhere. I guess we will just have to look for a house/neighborhood we like and then check the registry to make sure we're not moving right next door to a pervert!

This is an example of why checking out areas long distance only helps so much. You really need to come out here and visit a neighborhood to get a true feeling for it.
