Hi, I currently live in Falls Church, but we will be moving to Fairfax -- near Legato/West Ox Intersection near Fairfax Town Center. I'm attempting to find my commute daily to Bethesda and back. Can I get on 66 toward Tysons in the morning or is it all HOV? Would it be better to take Rte. 50 to 495? In the afternoon, is 66 West all HOV? I'm having trouble deciphering 66 in terms of HOV.

Thanks for any help.

Inside the beltway 66 is all HOV in the dominant direction. Outside, there is an HOV lane and you can use the shoulder (aka, the X-lane), but you basically don't want to use 66 at all. At least in normal rush hour. It's almost always awful. Best bet may be to cross on Monument over to Lee Highway by Wegman's, then that to 50 to the Beltway. It's not great, but it's usually not terrible...

My husband drives 66 from Bristow and says 66 is a parking lot from Route 50 to the beltway. He gets off at Nutley and takes the back roads to Tysons. (Kingsley to Cedar Lane to Gallows). You might try getting on the beltway at that point

I live in fairfax but work in bethesda. You don't have much alternatives other than 66 to 495 if you're heading to bethesda. You could try taking 50 or getting off on 123/243 to drive through tysons to get to 495, but I've tried it several times but on average, 66 to 495 is quicker.

Though since the construction began on 66/495 junction, the merging has become a pain and it seems like its getting worse.
