Question Best Ice Cream/Milkshakes in NoVA

Now that summer is approaching I'd be interested to hear recommendations on some of the best places for ice cream and more specifically milk shakes, my favorite treat, in NoVA. I'd prefer it if we could avoid suggesting places like Friendly's, Dairy Queen, TCBY, etc. and try to offer up some places that are truly unique and fresh. We have a few dairy farms in my area of PA that offer some delicious dairy products for sale, and if there are any places like that around then that would most certainly be a bonus!

Check out the Dairy Godmother in the Del Ray section of Alexandria.

Although the ambiance is not quite what it used to be (see below for the FDB when it was truly an icon), I recommend the Frozen Dairy Bar on Route 50 in Falls Church.

Default Rita's. Not one of a kind, but great custard and Italian ice.

I'm addicted to it. A few locations in NoVA, including 7-Corners.

Great suggestions, everyone! Keep them coming! Are there any actual dairy farms that sell fresh hard ice cream out in the more rural areas?

Loudoun only has one dairy farm left - Dogwood Farm, in Purcellville. I don't think they have a dairy bar or anything like that.

Some other ice cream choices:

Edibles Incredible - which has shops in both Reston Town Center and Brambleton Town Center - carries Gifford's ice cream. It's really good.

I've heard that Cafe Rumi in Ashburn has delicious gelato.

Thomas Sweet in Georgetown is tasty, too.

Unfortunately, Java Jones (formerly Hawaiian Scoop) in Ashburn closed earlier this year. They had Hawaiian treats like Lappert's ice cream and Dole Whip.
