Triangle area was so-so, but that's where my parents lived and I was still staying with them after highschool. When I got a job in DC, taking the VRE in was better than trying to drive. The VRE commute wore on me after a while, and I moved into an apartment in Alexandria. In this area, you have to live close to where you work, otherwise the commuting is going to degrade your personal life. If you live out in Quantico, you're going to spend at least 2 hours a day on commuting. That's going to take away from spending time with your growing family.
If you live in the northern part of Woodbridge you can still get a home for < 300k and access the VRE. There is a VRE station near the Belmont community. You can probably buy a condo in the newer Belmont and have easy access to VRE. If you want to buy a townhouse, you can buy into Lake Ridge which is not too far from the VRE station. An older single family home in Lake Ridge is also possible, but it'll probably need some work/updating.
