Cox provides cable service in Fairfax Co unless you're in Reston.
You can also choose to go with Verizon FIOS or DirectTV.
Utility and Cable Providers*- Fairfax County, Virginia

Reviving this - I'm Alexandria City and the Verizon bundle went up this month - I really don't want to pay $167/month for internet/phone/TV - any suggestions? I actually have AOL free for life but I'd hate to go back to dial-up - anyone know if separate services would be less? Thanks for any help.

As a side note, can someone explain the difference between Alexandria City versus Alexandria, Fairfax County....I am a bit confused on some of these city nomenclature.

I found it a little confusing at first as well. Take where I live for example: I live south of the beltway by about 3 seconds, which is not within the city limits of Alexandria. My mailing address is Alexandria because well, it's the post office and they do weird things, but I live in Fairfax county. This means that Fairfax county laws and taxes apply to me but not Alexandria City. When I filled out all my DMV stuff for example, I put down my mailing address obviously but then it also asked for where I physically live, which is Fairfax County. It also impacts your cable choices as stated above: I have cox, not out of choice but because Comcast is not available in my area of Fairfax county, only Alexandria City. It seems to be much more of an either/or thing here than in some other places. Where I grew up for example was both the city of Aurora as well as Arapahoe county. Hope I didn't make you more confused!

It goes back centuries....the wilderness that was Fairfax County, was sprinkled with settlements like Alexandria, Falls Church, Vienna, etc. These settlements became independant entities or "incorporated" cities or towns.
Population growth eventually forced expansion beyond the borders of these cities and towns and spilled into the wilderness. That these unincorporated areas use the same name as the adjoining city or town is probably the work of the Postal Service.
Things change, though....part of DC used to be in VA, until it was annexed by the City of Alexandria. Arlington County didn't exist until the 1930's...it was part of the City of Alexandria before that.
About the cable tv thing....when cable was introduced, companies bid to "wire" a city or county, an enormous investment. In return, the winning bidder was granted a monopoly to provide cable service in that city or county. These companies have been bought and sold over the years...Cox bought Media General which is the outfit that wired in Fairfax County. Only recently, has Verizon, with their own wires, and the dish networks getten into the game, resulting in a little competition for your pay tv (and internet and phone) dollar.
