Hi,interviewing for positions with my company. Could possibly be in Vienna or Chesapeake. Young family with small child. Any suggestions as to which is a better area?

chesapeake. your money will go much farther in HR than it will in NoVA. A good house can be had at $300k as in vienna it will take 600k. schools are good in most of chesapeake and vienna. traffic is murder in both places but a little less so in HR. so all in all, chesapeake should provide your family with a good experience.

you should also try VA beach a very big city with low crime and good schools. Norfolk's ghent section is also worth a look but with a small child you may not like the schools.

is this a long-term or short-term position? if you are still moving up the ladder, so to speak, and this a position you will not have forever I would choose the best career spot. if it is longer term and pay is the same, Chesapeake. I would only consider Vienna long-term if the pay differential was enough. Sometimes when working on a career we have to make decisions now that will pay off years later. If you choose the Chesapeake position I would live elsewhere - but that's me! if I couldn't afford to live right on the beach I would consider Suffolk, Smithfiled for more house for the $ and still beautiful rural locations with decent schools and less traffic, but close enough to commute to work and other areas.

I work in HR in NVA and really do not like living here but know there are many opportunities for better HR jobs in and near Vienna but not in the Hampton Roads area. Stick with NVA for employment growth.

I would be a sales manager covering a region...anything near Chesapeake. So driving would be part of the job.
