Are their any 'mountain' biking trails in NOVA? We love to bike on trails and in MI and NC we found them in tons of parks but we have only been able to find paved pathways so far. Any suggestions?

As I recall there is a whole series of great mountain bike trails in Fountainhead Park. Hopefully somebody else will chime in--I'm no expert, I've never tried it. I see a lot of cyclists there, though--the type who look like they take the sport seriously.

Whatever you do, please stay off the hiking trails that go right along the Potomac, especially the trails near Riverbend, Seneca, and Great Falls Park. They're marked "no bikes" but sometimes people ride there. The signs are there for a reason, not just to be mean to cyclists. Erosion is a real problem right along the river--the banks are slightly unstable. They're fine for hiking, but sometimes bikes can cause an entire section to cave in, especially if people are riding in groups.

Yes. We've only been on one non-bike trail at Fountainhead, but there are several dirt bike trails there, and I understand that they are a bit challenging.

See: FountainheadProject.org

And here's a map of the current trails: http://www.fountainheadproject.org/i...8_fh_map_r.pdf

Fountainhead is really nice. Another place that is really good is Schaeffer farm in German town, MD.

Another great trail that I like is difficult run / Great falls. You can park at the difficult run parking lot off Georgetown pike before Great falls entrance and ride your bike along the difficult run towards the potomac river. You can go all the way to Great falls.

Parking lot is located here:

Check out Potomac Pedalers. They are the largest biking group in the area. I'm sure you can find some good information from them.

Lake Accotink in Springfield is mostly unpaved, IIRC.

Go very early in the morning if you want to try Difficult Run. The parking lot is tiny and fills up quickly in the summer.

Check out the Fairfax Cross County Trail - the parts I've been on are not paved but it looks like they are starting to pave parts of it.
