Hi,

I love doing outdoors activities and I 've been living in DC for a while. I am wondering what else am I missing besides things from the list below:

- Biking on Captial Crescent trail, Rockcreek park, Mt Vermon trail, W&OD trail.

- Mountain biking at Fountainhead, Schaeffer farm rd, Wakefield, Great falls and Difficult Run.

- Kayaking in the potomac (I only rent Kayak from Jack's or Fletcher's and always wonder do I have own a kayak to paddle near Great falls?)

- Hiking the river trail in Great Falls, VA , the Billy Goat trail in Great Falls, MD, Maryland Height (Harpers Ferry) and Old Rag Mountain.

What are the other fun outdoors activities you have done in the area?

There is a DC outdoor adventure meetup group on meetups.com that you might be interested in. It is quite large and very well organized and they do all kinds of outdoors activities, hiking, biking, caving and on and on.

Don't forget biking the C&O Canal. You can go al the way to Cumberland, MD (about 180 mi.) and from Cumberland the new Allegheny Passage Trail goes all the way to Pittsburgh. There's sailing on the Potomac of Chesapeake Bay. Skiing in the winter within 2 hrs in PA and farther out in western MD or W. VA. Rock climbing in the Cabin John area. Kick ball leagues. In line skating on paved bike trails. One can hike/bike north-south across Fairfax County on the Cross County Trail (I believe about 30 mi.) The surface of this trail varies greatly from section to section but is gradually being improved throughout.

Definitely give sailing a try. If you don't know how, they can help: Mariner Sailing School - Alexandria, VA

There's a local hiking club and a rock climbing club in NoVa, google accordingly. There are lots of good recs for trails, etc if you just look around a bit, maybe ask at your favorite local shop (REI, etc).

I don't think you can rent a kayak for Great Falls, maybe b/c of liability issues -people get fished out of the water a lot there.
