I am currently looking to buy a house somewhere in Alexandria or Springfield area near the beltway. Does anyone know approximately how long the commute time would be when travelling to Bolling Air Force Base?

I'm assuming it would be quicker to take 495 into Maryland rather than take 95 North into DC and then to Bolling, is that correct?
Thanks

pdriese--You are right. Take 495 east to 295 north to get to Bolling AFB. From the Springfield interchange, that would be maybe 20-25 minutes with light traffic.

Ha ha! Light traffic! But it really does happen once in a while around here...

When you shop, try to find a place where you can get directly onto 495 without touching 95. 495 over the bridge is bad enough, adding on the tar pit that is 95 rush hour is just stupid if unnecessary.

495S from 95 is a nightmare during beach season, 495N from the mixing bowl is generally heavy during rush but moves. 95 in general is miserable in the direction of rush, but tolerable if HOV. It's also affected by summer vacationers.

I live in W. Springfield and used to work at BAFB. I'd go OKM Rd, ramp onto 495, across WW Br., and up 295. The routine 495 jams were in the opposite direction. The a.m drive was the easiest--about 30 min to the parking lot. I'd leave home eightish. Just avoid morning school buses and high school drivers in the 7 a.m. to 7:30 period if you will be using OKM Rd or Franconia Rd. Leaving before 7 a.m. would be a breeze. 295 was slow coming home, but after that there was no problem. The evening ride would be about 45 min. The exception to the ride home were Fridays, particularly in the warmer months when 495 was laden with commuters and interstate travellers. I would often bail out at Telegraph Rd and take Franconia Rd and OKM Rd into Springfield. Otherwise during school vacation the traffic lightens considerably. Another factor to consider in your drive is the sun which impacts west-to-east morning commutes and the opposite in the evening. This can slow things down depending on the location, time of sunrise and sunset, sky conditions, and snow cover. As everywhere, rain will adversely impact the time of commute.
