As many know we will possibly be on temporary assignment and I was curious if anyone knew anything about the rules in regards to high school sports. Here in NM if you move in from out of state you have a waiting period before you can play, but I wasn't to sure where to look for this info at. Also does anyone know since we will not be VA residents as we are there basically on TDY, if my son will be able to play sports for the school he will attend?

I don't think it will be an issue. FYI - here is the basic form for participation in VA high schools sports:

I agree. They just don't want students transferring across town, but they've tried doing it. Mt. Vernon was notorious for that move--recruiting players.

He will be able to play as long as he has passed at least 5 classes the previous year, so make sure you have transcripts available. It depends on the school district, but a lot of districts are leaning towards a 2.0 minimum GPA as well.

This is the only phrase in the consent form that concerns me,
must sit out all VHSL competition for 365 consecutive calendar days following a school transfer unless the transfer corresponded
with a family move. (Check with your principal for exceptions.)

since we are not technically moving, we will be on TDY for a year and will still be residents of NM, will this disqualify him? If it does he is going to be one unhappy kid, he loves football and was excited about getting to wrestle as well.

This won't be a problem since he finished this year with a 4.0 GPA.

In New Mexico....LOL. NoVa is pretty first class when it comes to interscholastic sports. Do some research, pick a winner. He will get all of the competition he needs.

We had a kid transfer in from Albuquerque his junior year. He started every game on Varsity for two years. This was in Springfield.

I would not worry about this - but as you get closer to deciding where to move, call the specific school and find out how the school interprets the VHSL policy. I really cannot imagine that, if your entire family is relocating for a temporary assignment, you will have a problem. Foreign exchange students in NoVa play on the high school sports teams and their families haven't moved to the States.

As the other poster mentioned, the regulations are intended to address situations where, say, someone who wants to play baseball at one high school places into that school on the pretext that it offers an Advanced Basketweaving course not offered at the school (with the lousy baseball team) then he is initially assigned to attend. Even then, the policy is not always enforced with too much rigor by some principals and Athletic Directors.

Give us some more information and we will point you in the right direction. Work Place. Preferred location of residence.

Get it straightened out before the end of this school year, if possible. My experience says school business is a hassle in the Summer for various legitimate reasons. Always someone in the chain that you can't get in touch with.

Hubby will be working in DC for either CBP Office of Congressional Affairs, DHS Office of Legislative Affairs or he will serve on a congressional committee assignment to the US House of Senate or Representatives. We have to be in corporate housing, the company we have used before has properties in Alexandria, Ballston, Clarendon, Crystal City, Fairfax, Herndon, McClean, Pentagon City, Reston, Rosslyn, Springfield and Vienna. We are also looking at Marriot Excustay and Oakwood Executive apartments We want him to be within walking distance to the metro or where he can catch the bus to the metro. We will only be able to bring one of our vehicles so his ability to use the metro is probably one of the most important things for us. I know that leaves someplaces out. When we were there in '07 we stayed in Pentagon City on Joyce St. We are hoping to know something by the end of this next week. If we can get there before school is out there I will definately get it taken care of but we are at the mercy of the gov't.
