Coming to Pentagon (5-ring circus) - where should we live?
Greetings, we'll be relocating to the NOVA area in a couple months, and I will be working at the Pentagon. Can you please offer some advice for a good area to live? Here are some particulars:
- Have no children, but a dog...small yard would be great
- SFH or townhome would be ideal
- housing allowance of $2500/mo...will pursue loan of up to $350-$375K
- looking to buy to take advantage of interest rates/market conditions
- would like to be no further than 30-35 minute commute to work
- Metro/slug access is a huge plus!
- Looking for a safe, clean area with great restaurants/local shopping
Will research listings through a realtor, but thought my first question would be to you guys...the experts. Sorry if this is question is old news, but need to get an idea of areas to look. Alexandria, Arlington, maybe Springfield? Those areas look easily accessible on a map but need an insider's perspective. Thanks very much for your responses!

Parkfairfax in Alexandria, VA has some units that are townhome-like. Parkfairfax Condominiums - Welcome to Parkfairfax
10 minute commute to the Pentagon. Next to Shirlington and only a few minutes more to Potomac Yards and Old Town.

We live at The Park at Arlington Ridge. Its newly remodeled and the grounds are very well kept. Just a 5 minute drive to the pentagon, cheap rent, dog friendly, and within walking distance to a Giant grocery store and other basics. Seriously check it out.

Craigslist
Not sure if you will be afforded a chance to look before committing. However, craigslist has a lot of hidden gems you can find. I am also starting at the pentagon soon and just landed a townhouse half a mile from Shirlington 50 yds from a bus stop (15mins to pentagon) it's 2bd 2 1/12bth 1200 sqft and only 1800. Not pet fees either!!! You just need to do some homework.

Thanks for your replies...it is unfortunate not be able to visit prior to our move. We'll just have to hit the ground running!

I have lived in the Shirlington area before as a single and then childless married. I believe it would meet your needs. Fairlington, Park Fairfax, and other townhomes in the area are very convenient to bus lines and great shopping/restaurants. In general, Arlington and Alexandria is where you should focus.
