Any Yelpers? Facebookers? Tweeters? MySpacers?
DISCLAIMER: While I know "advertising" of competing web sites isn't allowed on this forum I really don't consider online social networking sites to be direct competition to City-Data, but if it is deemed to be as such then a moderator should feel free to close/delete this thread.
Having just joined Yelp (I'm still fresh with only 6 reviews!) I was wondering if there are any other Yelpers amongst us? What about people on Facebook? Twitter? MySpace? LinkedIn? The social networking component of City-Data hasn't really "taken off" in the same magnitude that these other sites have, so it would be neat to add others as "friends" (of "foes!" ) on those venues. For those on Yelp I'm the dorky-looking guy who has most recently written reviews of Cafe du Park in DC, Clyde's of Reston, Cosi of Reston, and Silver Diner of Reston. Add me!

I have a strong inkling that Normie may be a "Yelper," and if so then I hope you enjoyed the compliment I just sent you on there (if not, then I must have really made the day of some random stranger!) LOL!

No, I do not do any of those sites. Nothing against sites like that, but they're not my thing. I'm only interested in "information sharing" sites. I'm sure social sites are great, but my life is too full of social opportunities as it is. I only have time for internet forums because I think the internet has incredible potential for sharing data, and I thinking I'm contributing to the world by sharing the knowledge I have. So I guess you could say reference sites are my thing.
But thanks for giving me an opportunity to bring up a pet peeve. Guys, I really don't want to see this forum turned into yet another Facebook, yet I fear that's about to happen.
Why do we need to do that? There are already a dozen sites where you can socialize or you can lash out if you're angry at the world, or you can play internet warrier games. If you think it's just hi-larious to see if you can stir up some tension, there are maybe a hundred sites where you can play games like that. But there's only one place like city-data. Why do we have to make it like all the other sites?
I really don't want this forum tolerating people who think it's a funny game to make outrageous accusations or try to start arguments--some may say "let them have their fun, they're harmless" but I've seen so many forums ruined this way. Before you know it you're attracting the neener neener crowd and the forum becomes nothing more than a bunch of monkeys throwing poo at each other. The people who actually have useful information to share disappear, and the people who need help are mocked. Let's not let that happen here.
Just my opinion, thank you for letting me air a pet peeve. And just to make my opinion clear, IMO there's nothing wrong with the social sites, I'm sure they're a lot of fun. But let's allow city-data to be a place where we share data about cities. There's a real need for that.

I have a MySpace, but I've done nothing with it - I just joined it to read some friends' blogs.

Having lived in 6 states, I'm pretty busy on Facebook as its the easiest way to keep in touch with everyone. However, I have practically no FB friends from DC Metro on my page. Maybe they're too busy being rude and intolerant
